Pierless Adventures - March 19 - Galley Cleanout
Today's big accomplishment was getting the galley sorted. Scott did most of this work (thanks!). He went through the utensils and dishes, then pots and pans. Did some rearranging to make frequently used items easier to get to. We also modified a cabinet for dry food storage. We need some bins to keep that area in order, but it will be easy to get to and has quite a bit of room. Another area is being used for longer-term storage of food items. We will rotate those items into the more accessible areas as we consume our larder...
When tested, our stern navigation light did not work. We pulled it off and found a bad bulb and some corrosion. Once the bulb was replaced and the contacts cleaned up, it worked fine. We still need to caulk around the fitting, but it is back up and working.
Our other big project today was to start on the starboard (right) fresh water tank. We discovered a leak in the filling flange and hose last spring, so I knew this was something to address. We brought hose and other materials to do the repair since sourcing these things in MX can be a challenge. To get to this tank, we have to take apart the starboard settee. The tank is underneath it. We got about half way through this repair and found we needed some caulk that we don't have. We hope to find what we need and finish it tomorrow.
I spent some time this morning worming my way aft to check and clean the wire contacts for the engine controls. This is a tight area to work in, but the cool morning and our small fan kept me comfortable.
The weather is warming up a bit, but still a far cry from the stifling heat we had last year. From Scott:
Yesterday I saw a pickup truck whip out of a side street with a .50 caliber machine gun mounted in the bed and manned by a soldier in camouflage. It's at that particular moment that an American male thinks to himself; "I don't care what kind of gas mileage my hybrid gets, I want that!" Need to merge onto I-5 during rush hour? Tracers are much more effective than a turn signal.
Brian and I trudged to the Marina Mazatlan tonight for a Hollywood shower. They have hot water 23/6. Water pressure here in Mazatlan varies from "pressure washer" to "soft mist" and often, about the time you are fully lathered, the pressure drops to the latter. One then has simply to wait until the pressure builds up again, rinse off the dried soap, and check the calendar on the way out to see what day it is now.
Mexico teaches patience. Except for the machine gun. That teaches one not to tailgate.
