Pierless Adventures - April 24 - Heading Back
We hoped to reach Cabo by early evening, but had no idea if they would have space for us. We arrived just after midnight and were able to raise the marina on the VHF to see what options they had for us. Unfortunately, there was no room at the inn.
Our second option was northeast from Cabo at an area called Cabo San Jose. The marina there is called Marina Puerto Los Cabos. It is a small, quiet marina and looked like our best option. Winds were down, so back to motoring...
We arrived at 5:00 a.m. in the dark. It was a new experience coming into an unknown harbor in the dark, but our instruments provided accurate information and the entrance was properly lighted, so in we went! They had a nice deep entrance, so that was a relief. We motored in, looking for a guest dock or some other area we could tie up until we could check in. We found the fuel dock which also served as a long guest dock.
We pulled up at the guest dock/fuel dock and an attendant greeted us. In broken spanish/english we communicated our desire to stay one day, get fuel and use the facilities. He got us checked in and situated and soon we were all asleep.
Turns out there were no lights in the restrooms. At first we thought it was a night thing, but there were no lights during the day either... Otherwise, the facilities were nice and clean. Just had to take a light with you.
After a short sleep, we walked over to an inn with a restaurant for breakfast. Four weary sailors!
After breakfast, we did boat chores (work on windvane, stuffing box adjustment, engine check, water, fuel, etc.). Dave and Tony explored town a little and found little to explore. There were a few restaurants, but not much else. The main town was a few miles away and we didn't feel like hiring a cab, so stayed close to the marina.
We have determined that at 5 knots under engine, we uses about 0.46 gallons/hour. This means a full tank is plenty to get us to Mazatlan. That is better than 10 mpg for a big, heavy boat. Not bad.
The marina itself was nice and was very quiet. We had become used to the constant night partying in Maz and Cabo, but this place was chill. A very nice change.
We went out to a local restaurant for dinner and also enjoyed watching a sea lion float around on its back, head in the water and flippers up in the air. We had not seen this behavior before. It was also quite vocal much of the night. Still, this was the most mellow and calm place we have been yet.
Tony made arrangements to fly out from Cabo San Lucas, so we said goodbye to him in the morning and headed back toward Mazatlan at 10:30.
Well, dang it !!! I am so disappointed that you had to turn back. What happens now?
