March 10, 2023 - Shopping and Cleaning

March 10:

Temperatures have been comfortable so far. I spent a fair amount of time cleaning today. I tackled the head (bathroom) and the galley (kitchen). Lots of fine dust makes its way into the boat over the course of time, not to mention the (relatively small) evidence of my cockroach boarders...

I shopped today, but broke the cardinal rule of shopping in Mazatlan: Go early before it gets hot!  I left around 11:00, mostly because the phone store does not open until then. I borrowed 100 pesos from my neighbor (have not been to the local cash machine yet) and walked to the bus line. The mall is about a mile or two from the boat. The bus costs 10 or 11 pesos ($0.50 USD or so, depending on which bus), but is worth it to avoid walking in the heat.  Taxis cost at least $5.00 USD.

The mall is air conditioned, so very comfortable once inside. Buying a 1 month contract for my phone went smoothly. The mall was busier and there were no COVID restrictions as there were the last two years. Still not used to the relaxed rules.

After the mall, I went across the road to Walmart and Sam's Club. These are the closest places to get food and basic supplies. Soriana is another supermarket with a better selection and higher quality products, but it is a longer bus ride by far. There are numerous small stores, like a small 7-11, but the selection is quite limited. I do frequent those when I know they have what I am looking for. I picked up some basics (break, milk, granola, tortillas, veggies and fruit, cheese, etc.) Also a tarp for the boat. The tarp really helps keep the cabin cooler during the day.  It also keeps the heavy morning dew off the boat.  I left the boat tarped, but the hurricanes destroyed two of them. I also picked up some roach traps...

The ride back to the boat went without a hitch. It is nice to already know which buses to take in town. Back at the boat I had more of my leftover pizza for lunch along with potato chips, an apple and a banana. Starting to feel more normal now.

A good part of the afternoon was occupied with deck cleaning. It took a while and when finished, my back was ready for a break. Even though it was a relatively cool day, the sun is pretty intense. I finished the day with the last of the pizza, a shower and to bed. Tomorrow's weather looks a little cooler!!
