I completed my bilge pump test today and found a problem with one of my two electric pumps.  I think it is a wiring issue, so will look into it in the next day or two.  One of my manual pumps needed a new handle, so I made one out of a dowel.  I need to test it to see if it is strong enough for the task.

To communicate while offshore, I have a Garmin InReach device.  It is a satellite based communication device which keeps track of my location, gives me weather reports, allows me to send text messages and has an emergency notification function.  It is a reasonably affordable way to have communication capabilities offshore.  It won't give me internet access, so I can not download more detailed weather and routing information, but it is a useful tool nonetheless.

I have a friend at home who will keep tabs on conditions in the Pacific using weather routing software.  He will be able to text me suggestions on the best course to follow on the voyage.  The goal is to stay in areas with favorable winds and avoid areas with high winds.  The leg to Hawaii won't be too tricky once I get into the trade winds.  From Hawaii home, it gets a little more complicated, so having his help will be much appreciated.

Another nice feature of the Garmin device is it will track my position and I can share a link for anyone who wants to see where I am in real time.  I will post the link once I get it all set up.  I am going to spend some more time practicing with the device to become more familiar and efficient with it.

Sunday night about a dozen of us marina folks went up to the marina lounge and visited, drank a beer or two and played pool and foosball.  It was nice to visit and socialize a bit rather than hunkering down on the boat...

  1. Those Garmin devices are great, Brian. I use one when I'm on road trips…it's nice to know that someone can always find me if I get lost 😂. It will be interesting to watch your journey on the water!
